After months of secrecy, the proverbial flood gates have been opened in regards to Logan, the third solo Wolverine film and the final appearance of Hugh Jackman as the berserker mutant who’s the best at what he does. We’ve known for a while who was going to appear in the film, but now we’re finding out who everyone’s playing. The most surprising bit of casting was comedian Stephen Merchant, famous for his collaborations with Ricky Gervais like The Office and Extras, so who could Merchant possibly be playing in the ultra-serious world of the X-Men? It turns out, it’s someone we’ve met in the X-universe before…
Via the Twitter feed of Logan director James Mangold, we got our first look at Merchant as the mutant Caliban.
Now you might be saying, “Wait a minute, wasn’t Caliban in X-Men: Apocalypse?” And you’d be right. The mutant with the ability to track other mutants did indeed appear in the Bryan Singer film from earlier this year as a Germany-based information peddler and documents forger that helps mutants for a price. In Apocalypse, Caliban was played by Tómas Lemarquis, but since Logan takes place decades after that, it would make sense that another actor would play the older Caliban. What function Caliban will serve in the new film though is unknown.
Logan will see Jackman play Wolverine for the ninth and final time alongside Patrick Stewart as Professor X. Boyd Holbrook will play the villainous cyborg Donald Pierce, and it’s widely expected that Richard E. Grant is playing Mr. Sinister, who will be the main bad guy of the film, but that’s not yet confirmed. Eriq La Salle, Elise Neal and Elizabeth Rodriguez co-star.
Logan will be in theatres everywhere on March 3, 2017.
