Leonardo DiCaprio is well-known for his environmental activism, flying to places hither and yon to talk to world leaders about how somebody should please think of the children! But if there’s another thing about DiCaprio it’s that he’s not especially well-known for his sense of whimsy, but I guess he might be willing to put that aside for the sake of the planet. Captain Planet, that is. Though it’s surely been in the back of the minds of many Hollywood producers for years, DiCaprio and his Appian Way production company are looking to make a big screen, live-action version of Captain Planet and the Planeteers.
DiCaprio will serve as producer of the new Captain Planet along with Jennifer Davisson Killoran at Paramount Pictures, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Glen Powell and Jono Matt have been hired to turn the 1990s Turner/DIC cartoon series into a live-action, franchise ready hit for the 21st century. Obviously there’s no word on casting yet, or who might end up directing the film.
For those of you that may have blocked out the 90s from your memory, Captain Planet and the Planteers followed five teens plucked from across the globe by Gaia, the spirit of the Earth. Given five rings of power that allowed them to control earth, air, fire, water and heart, they fought grave environmental threats to the planet, especially the ones created by the Eco-Villains, who were basically the Captain Planet Legion of Doom. When the Planeteers got caught in a jam, they combined their powers to summon Captain Planet, whose look was apparently influence by the DC Comics character Captain Atom.
We’ll have more news about this project as it becomes available. In the meantime, start getting excited for this Captain Plaent movie, or he’ll turn you into a tree!
