Many people are looking forward to Shane Black‘s upcoming half-sequel/half-reboot of Predator, called simply The Predator, and why not? Black is an accomplished writer and director with a cult following, he knows action, and he even appeared as Hawkins in the original film. We know that Narcos star Boyd Holbrook is now likely to be the leading man in the film, and we know that Arnold Schwarzenegger is likely to return in some capacity as Dutch, but in talking much more broadly about the film, Black had music for fans’ ears. His Predator will be scary, funny, and absolutely R-rated!

“I think the Predator movies have slightly veered from typical sci-fi in that there is a sort of thriller aspect to them,” Black told Collider. I think it should be scary, I think it should be funny, and I think ultimately it should be wondrous and about perceiving things that human beings very seldom get a chance to see… I don’t mean movie audiences I mean characters in the movie. I’m not saying the movie will be nothing anyone’s seen before [laughs].”

Having said that, Black confirms that he does have his eye on an R-rating for his Predator, and despite recent trends of studios to maximize audience with a max PG-13 rating for their franchise films, Black said he found Twentieth Century Fox receptive to the idea to go more adult. “Fox has been very cooperative. I mean part of it is the success they had with Deadpool, but I also made a case-and I think they agreed-that fans of the Predator generally, probably aren’t looking to go to see a PG-13-rated version of it,” Black said. “It would be more of a letdown if it was sort of tailored to a family friendly audience than if it were allowed to play out to the same scale and level that the first R-rated one did.”

As for that contentious leading man issue, the substitution of Holbrook for Benicio del Toro was disappointing to the fans, but Black said that the audience will unlikely be disappointed once they see Holbrook in action. “It’s quite good news. With Benicio and the scheduling, we just couldn’t make it work,” Black told JoBlo in a separate interview. “We have a release date and we had to start much later than we wanted to. This way, the silver lining is this kid, who I’ve spent some time with now, he’s just marvelous, he’s amazing.”

The Predator will begin shooting sometime early in the new year in Vancouver for a February 9, 2018 release. Stay tuned for more news…
