Marvel announcing a Spider-Man comic is not news, but Marvel announcing a Spider-Man: Homecoming prequel comic is probably the best news of both worlds. Just when you thought you didn’t want to see another Spider-Man movie in your lifetime, Tom Holland swung into our hearts as the Friendly Neighbourhood Wall-Crawler in this past summer’s Captain America: Civil War. Marvel Comics, perhaps sensing that anticipation, is going to give us more about the Holland iteration of the character in a new comic that will fill in some of the blanks between Spider-Man’s appearance in Civil War, and his first big screen solo adventure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The book, which is creatively titled Spider-Man: Homecoming Prelude, will hit store shelves a couple of weeks in advanced of the movie’s release, but you can pre-order it now on Amazon. Here’s the description:
You adored his introduction in Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, you can’t wait for his Hollywood Homecoming – now really get to know the Spider-Man of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in this prelude to his big-screen solo adventure! By day, young Peter Parker attends high school and lives with his Aunt May. By night, he fights crime with wall-crawling powers and web-swinging tech – and he’s destined to one day have an amazing, spectacular, sensational reputation as his neighborhood’s friendly hero! Join Marvel’s Spider-Man as he makes his first tentative web-swings towards a blockbuster future!
This is not a new idea, of course. Marvel has previously published comic book prequels for Iron Man 2, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Ant-Man, and though they’re not required reading to watch the movie, they do get inside those query-filled fan heads about what exactly was going on in the weeks and months leading up to the movie, and serves to tide the most excitable fan over until opening night. It will be interesting to see if the comic book addresses Spider-Man origins, or if the movie will do that in a significant or not-so-significant way. This is the first new Spider-Man series after all that won’t open with an origin story after all.
Spider-Man: Homecoming Prelude comes out on June 20, 2017; Spider-Man: Homecoming itself will be in theatres everywhere on July 7.
