Pretty much every blockbuster movie that comes out nowadays gives you the option to see the film in 3D. Sure, it’s a little more expensive, but sometimes it really makes the movie more enjoyable. Other times, of course, it’s a gimmick for the movie studios to squeeze a few extra bucks out of the public. As we now live in a 3D film world, good or bad, love it or hate it, there’s one person we really can thanks to for it: James Cameron.
His blockbuster Avatar, helped pave the way for 3D to be a part of the public lexicon. The film’s dynamic visuals helped ensure that Avatar became the number one movie of all time. Now that he’s going back to Pandora for two upcoming sequels for Avatar. And just as he helped revolutionize 3D technology with the first Avatar film, he wants to even up the ante for the next Avatar films, including making it so we can watch the movie in 3D… without 3D glasses!
“I’m going to push. Not only for better tools, workflow, high dynamic range and high frame rates – the things we are working toward. I’m still very bullish on 3-D, but we need brighter projection, and ultimately I think it can happen – with no glasses. We’ll get there.”
3D without the glasses? Does that really sound so far-fetched? Nowadays television makers are making 3D televisions that don’t require 3D glasses using hologram technology, including StreamTV Networks. Why not bring the same technology to the big screen.
“When looking at the TV, I was able to move around in front of it without losing the 3-D effect. It’s not as immersive as, say, what you’ll see at the movies while wearing a pair of polarized glasses, but it was still pretty impressive.”
So what do you think? Would you want to see a 3D movie without those bulky glasses?
