avengelyne

There’s was a minor controversy earlier this year during the lead-up to Deadpool when it seemed like Rob Liefeld was getting the solo credit as Deadpool’s creator without writer Fabian Nicieza. That’s a lot of cache, and given Deadpool’s boffo box office, it should come as no surprise then that studios might be interested in other Liefeld properties, and boy does he have a lot of them. Liefeld was a comic making machine in the 90s, and now it seems that one of his creations is about to get the big screen treatment at Paramount Pictures. Want to see an Avengelyne movie? They certainly hope so.

Akiva Goldsman, the artist formally known as the guy that wrote Batman and Robin, will be producing Avengelyne with an eye on also being its director, according to Deadline. Co-created by Liefeld and Cathy Christian for Liefeld’s Maximum Press in 1995, Avengelyne is about a fallen angel, one of Heaven’s mightiest warriors, cast to Earth to pay penance by fighting all manner of monsters and demons as practice for Armageddon, where she’ll serve on the frontlines.  “Avengelyne resonated so powerfully with the audience because her story of redemption is one that is so relatable,” Liefeld was quoted as saying. “A fallen angel, sentenced to redeem herself by serving humanity, Earth is a foreign environment to her, she must adapt in order to save herself as well as mankind. Her dilemma provides humor amidst the larger plot engine driving her journey.”

Avengelyne was previously developed with Liefeld writing the script and Deadpool co-star Gina Carano reportedly going to play the title role. No one has yet been cast to play Avengelyne, but Deadline says that the studio is looking at making a movie in the vein of John Wick, except with a fallen angel instead of a hitman avenging the murder of his dog. Previously, producers were hoping to make something in an Underworld mode, but we’ll have to wait and see though as to what exactly an Avengelyne movie will look like.

We’ll have more news about this project as it becomes available.
