After its first week in the US, Doctor Strange is already shattering expectations. You can check out our review for the movie here. The most recent Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie has already scored $85 million for its first weekend. Although it did not the previous MCU record set by Thor: The Dark World (which was $85.7 million), it’s still doing better than expected, and that doesn’t even count its global box office.
Doctor Strange made an additional $118 million this weekend overseas. This is mostly thanks to China where it made $44.3 in that country alone. Also thanks to IMAX screens worldwide (the film played on the more than 1000 IMAX screen worldwide) and 3D ticket prices, it made an additional $24.2 million as well. Basically, since it’s been released, the film has made $325.4 million at the global box office.
Every time a new MCU movie comes out, people ask, “Will XXX will be the MCU movie that breaks the trend?” And like clockwork, Marvel keeps batting 1000%. Not only are these movies commercially successful, but they are also critically successful. You saw our review, but the film also has a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Needless to say, with the success of Doctor Strange, Marvel Studios is still dominating the box office and after 14 movies, it looks like the trend is here to stay.
