Jessica Chastain is quite the accomplished actress. She starred in films such as The Martian, Zero Dark Thirty, and Interstellar. And now, she can finally add super hero as she will soon take on the role of Painkiller Jane. The character made her first appearance in 22 Brides #1 (1996) and was was created by Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada.

A member of the NYPD, Jane Vasco is recruited by the FBI to infiltrate an organized crime ring. During her investigations, she is nearly killed. Brought to the edge of death, she gains the super human ability to regenerate herself allowing herself to become nearly indestructible. After her experience nearly dying, she quits her job as a policewoman and becomes the vigilante known as Painkiller Jane. Coincidentally, Jane has no real offensive abilities. She’s just incredibly difficult to kill. She’s taken blows to the back from axes, gunshot wounds, and other injuries. Minor injuries can heal quick, but more serious ones can take longer. It should also be noted that her abilities doesn’t prevent her from feeling the pain of receiving them.

This isn’t the first time Painkiller Jane has been adapted for live-action format. In 2005, Quesada and Palmiotti were writers on a made-for-television version of Painkiller Jane which starred Emmanuelle Vaugier as the main role and aired on Sci Fi. However, that role wasn’t known as Jane Vasco. Instead, Vaugier played a character known as Captain Jane Browning, and she was part of a special task force known as the Painkiller Unit. In 2007, a television series (also for Sci Fi) called Painkiller Jane was developed but only lasted one season. That series starred Kirstanna Loken.

Chastain will also be producing the film. No release date has been set.
