Shortly after the release of the novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, author J.K. Rowling revealed that the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Albus Dumbledore, was gay. There wasn’t a lot of time in the books, or the movies, to explore Dumbledore’s personal life, past or present, but since young Dumbledore will have a part in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise, perhaps the door will be open to exploring Albus’ love life. The question was put to Rowling, who is penning the Fantastic Beasts screenplays, as to whether or not Dumbledore’s love life will get some limelight in the sequel.

“Well, I can’t tell you everything I would like to say because this is obviously a five-part story, so there’s lots to unpack in that relationship,” Rowling told Screen Crush. “I will say that you will see Dumbledore as a younger man, and quite a troubled man because he wasn’t always the sage. He was always very clever, but we’ll see what I think was the formative period of his life. As far as his sexuality is concerned, watch the space.”

The space will definitely be watched because, as per Rowling’s own previous comments, it was implied that Dumbledore was in love with Gellert Grindelwald, his friend turned adversary with whom he had a climactic dual in 1945. Of course, by now everyone knows that Johnny Depp will appear as Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts sequel and will cameo in the upcoming initial entry. Although Rowling has gone into no further detail about their relationship, like if the feelings were even mutual, it seems apparent that part of what’s being done in the Fantastic Beasts film series is to add a little detail to Dumbledore’s background. Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and Dumbledore already know each other as the trailers have revealed, and the production is currently looking for an actor to play the younger Dumbledore. So like Rowling said, watch this space.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be in theatres everywhere next Friday, and the sequel will follow suit in November 16, 2018.
