(*Insert There can be only one joke here) Now that we’ve got that out-of-the-way, Lionsgate and Summit teamed up back in 2008 to acquire the rights to Highlander with plans to reboot the franchise on the big screen. There have been a number of directors attached to the project like Justin Lin, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, but in a move much like the Highlander plot without all the head chopping off, there can be only one. Dammit, we just couldn’t stay away from that joke could we. THR is reporting that John Wick Co-director Chad Stahelski is now in the Highlander center seat.
That is Chad Stahelski, on the left, and Tim Miller‘s replacement for Deadpool 2 David Leitch on the right. The pair brought us John Wick, a fabulous action packed Keanu Reeves movie that proved you should never under any circumstances shoot an ex-assassin’s dog.
Stahelski had this to say about the new gig:
I’ve been a huge fan of the original property since I saw it in high school. Such great themes of immortality, love, and identity are all wrapped up in such colorful mythology. I can’t think of a better property that gives the opportunity to create interesting characters, mythic themes and action set pieces.
If Stahelski can bring the same level of action and tension to the Highlander series than we’re all in for a great ride. Now the search for a writer begins, and there will most likely be more than just the one.
