‘Doctor Strange’ Breaks Marvel Solo Record

Doctor Strange has just broken Marvel’s box office record, having earned a staggering $616 million worldwide (according to Box Office Mojo). It has topped The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Thor, and is now Marvel Cinematic Universe’s highest grossing solo intro film since Iron Man. This is particularly impressive for a film whose main character was not necessarily that well-known before the film was released, unless perhaps you were a studious comic book reader. Marvel and Disney must be pretty happy right now.

Again, considering the fact that Doctor Strange hasn’t even opened in Japan yet, the movie is doing seriously well, and even looks likely to be edging towards Guardians of the Galaxy’s previous 2014 record for highest MCU debut for a standalone franchise, which grossed $773 million worldwide. Thanks to Doctor Strange, Moana and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Disney could be creeping towards an all-time record for its intake in a single year, as the studio just surpassed a ridiculous $6 billion for 2016.

So, after this year’s cinematic success, what will Marvel be offering us next? It looks like we’ll be getting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on May 5th 2017, then Spider-Man: Homecoming on July 7th 2017. Interestingly, these will be followed by Thor: Ragnarok on November 3rd 2017, which is said to feature an intriguing cameo with Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange. This idea was amusingly teased in the end-credits of Doctor Strange, which showed Thor talking to Strange about Thor’s adopted brother Loki and the search for their father Odin. Of course, in 2018, we’ll also be seeing a number of the MCU’s characters come together in The Avengers: Infinity War. The movie is said to have an expected release date of May 4th 2018, with a predicted rating of PG-13, and a lot of potential characters. The full list of characters who we can expect to see appearing in Infinity War remains to be seen, but rumour has it that Doctor Strange, Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Thanos, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Vision, Spider Man, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Bucky Barnes, Star Lord, Ant-Man and Scarlet Witch will be pretty central to the upcoming movie. After the huge success of Doctor Strange, it will be interesting to see how his complicated character fits into Infinity War and interacts with the others.
