At Disney’s Epcot theme park in Orlando, Fl sits the park’s signature landmark – Spaceship Earth. This giant 180′ ft tall round globe has been a staple attraction ever since the park opened in 1982. It stands front and center, greeting guests to a world of imagination. While foreboding looking, its presence gets knocked down a peg thanks to its not so exciting innards. The ride inside is a boring and highly inaccurate tram ride through human’s technological history *fart noise*. Still, it’s a giant sphere. Giant spheres are cool! And it’s going to look even cooler. On Dec 5th, just in time for Star Wars: Rogue One, the worlds largest looking golfball will be transformed in a freakin’ Death Star!
Disney will be celebrating Star Wars at Disney’s Hollywood Studios as well as the upcoming film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story with an invite-only meet-up — and that meet-up will feature Spaceship Earth magically transforming into the Death Star.
Disney Parks Blog will be hosting the meet-up, and will include local media, and during their Star Wars celebration, Spaceship Earth will be transformed into the Death Star through digital projections. And before the Death Star appears, updates on current and upcoming Star Wars experiences at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be shared to the masses.
As of this posting, this event opportunity has filled. For those unable to attend, Disney will have a live-feed Disney Parks Blog‘s site on Monday night.
It’s important to note that this will not be a permanent fixture. It’s just a digital projection much like the animated projections at Cinderellas castle for their night time fire work spectacular. This Death Star lay-over will only run for this exclusive event and may run in conjuncture with Star Wars Weekends typically held May 15-17, May 22-24, May 29-31, June 5-7, and June 12-14.
Given the immeasurable power of Disney, and their mega IP that is Star Wars, it’s about time they rolled out a Death Star.
“Good, good. Everything is going according to plan”
