For a relatively niche part of the Marvel universe, Guardians of the Galaxy was an enormous hit when it was released in cinemas in 2014. Between Chris Pratt’s crude yet quirky Star Lord and the absurdly lovable duo of Rocket and Groot, it had all the right ingredients to make people laugh and warm their hearts. It came as no surprise when a sequel was announced and the fan base has only grown since the trailer for the new movie was released recently and we all got a look at Baby Groot in action.
Incorporating the main characters into the broader Marvel cinematic universe would not be a dumb move on the company’s part and there’s bound to be a market out there for further sequels and spin-offs sooner or later. Director James Gunn has certainly not shied away from the idea, with a story starring Rocket and Groot already a popular idea among fans. There are also some fairly solid sounding rumours that the characters will appear in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War.
In a recent interview with Screen Junkies News, Vin Diesel, the voice of Groot in the first movie and Baby Groot in the new one, has suggested that some people are pretty serious about the expansion of the Guardians stories. In fact, he seemed quite confident about some of the things we can expect.
“I think if it’s up to James Gunn, you are going to see a Groot and Rocket movie after Infinity War. I think that’s highly possible. We shall see. I know that, somewhere in the universe, you are going to see Groot and Hulk battle. You can write it somewhere. You are going to see that poster: Hulk vs. Groot.”
It’s only a matter of months before the next installment is released, with Guardians of the Galaxy volume 2 due out in May 2017. Where the story goes after that is still a matter of speculation, but if the conversation surrounding it right now is anything to go by, it’s going to be awesome.
