Emma Stone’s ‘Cruella’ Movie Lands a Director – Wait… They’re Making a Movie About The Michael Vick of Disney Villains?
Reception to Disney’s live-action adaptations have varied. Some films like Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book was received with more than warm regards, while other films Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent were outright forgettable. Regardless, Disney taking some of their classic stories and/or characters and given them the live-action treatment has been quite financially successful for the house of mouse. While Beauty and The Beast starring Emma Watson is the next on deck, there is a whole series of other adaptations in the works; including Cruella, a live-action origin story for the 101 Dalmatians villain Cruella De Vil.
It’s already be reported that Emma Stone will be cast as that “inhuman beast.” And now, the project has taken another leap forward, in that it has just landed a director
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mozart in the Jungle co-creator and accomplished theater director Alex Timbers is in negotiations to direct the live-action Cruella De Vil movie for Disney.
Timbers is making his feature directing debut with Cruella, but don’t let his lack of cinematic experience fool you. He’s a seasoned stage director whose credits include the Broadway shows Rocky and Peter and the Starcatchers, both of which earned him Tony nominations. In addition, he’s currently working on a stage adaptation of Moulin Rouge! with Baz Luhrmann.
Cruella is being scripted by Kelly Marcel, whose credits include Fifty Shades of Grey and Disney’s own Saving Mr. Banks. Andrew Gunn (Bad Santa 2) and Marc Platt (La La Land) are producing. While no release date has been set, with star and director attached, this project is sure be on the fast track.
Why a Cruella movie? Wasn’t Glenn Close enough?Does Disney want to do for Cruella what they did for Maleficent – a good girl turned bad, being reminded how to be good again? There’s nothing redeeming about a smoking villainess who wants to murder puppies for their for. She’s the Michael Vick of Disney villains! Maybe they’re going for a Disney version of The Devil Wears Prada? Whatever their vision is, Cruella seems a weird character to be given a solo movie. The talent involved, however, makes for a modicum of curiousness.
