Since well before the development of Thor: Ragnarok, there were rumours about Planet Hulk. The fate of the incredible Hulk in Avengers: Age of Ultron left things very much up in the air in terms of the Green Goliath’s fate, and when it was announced that Mark Ruffalo – and Hulk himself – would be appearing in Ragnarok, billed as a space road trip movie, the rumour mill really started churning about how the film was going to incorporated Planet Hulk in some form. Well now form has become substance because Thor director Taika Waititi has confirmed that the road trip will be stopping off on Sakaar, the titular planet from Planet Hulk.
“Sakaar was just an insane, far-off, futuristic place which was the biggest shift for the film and these characters,” Waititi told Total Film magazine in a new interview. Total Film added that Sakaar is where Thor (Chris Hemsworth) will re-unite with the Hulk and his alter ego Bruce Banner, who has made a name for himself as a gladiator on Sakaar. The integration of elements from the Planet Hulk story have been continually revealed since production on Ragnarok began, with concept art revealed at Comic Con featuring the Hulk in gladiator gear, and Waititi revealing on Facebook a couple of months ago that Miek, one of Hulk’s Sakaar allies, would be appearing in the film.
Having said all that, don’t expect Planet Hulk stuff to completely takeover Thor: Ragnarok. There’s a lot of ground there for the titular character of the film to explore, and Sakaar is just one stop on a journey from Asgard to Earth to Hel as the God of Thunder works to undo the machinations of his adopted brother Loki (Tom Hiddelston). Idris Elba and Anthony Hopkins return to the Thor world in this latest chapter while Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson, Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill and Karl Urban join Hemsworth and Ruffalo in this new advanture.
Thor: Ragnarok will be in theatres everywhere on November 3, 2017.
