Before we even sat in the theaters, we knew that there was not going to be an “opening crawl” for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. We have never been without an opening crawl for a Star Wars movie before, so it was a little jarring when we actually sat down to see the new Star Wars spinoff without the iconic imagery. Lucasfilm stated that the opening crawl would only be for the “Skywalker Saga” films (Episodes 1-9) and any of the anthology films would not have the opening crawl.
For the most part, fans did not mind it when they saw Rogue One. We saw the Lucasfilm logo and were ready to go either way. There was a small minority of fans who griped on the internet about not seeing the crawl… including the original creator of the crawl Dan Perri (who designed it back in 1977).
“If any film in the new Star Wars canon needed a crawl just to let people know where we are in time in this universe, it was Rogue One. At the very least, I feel these words give added weight to the opening prologue of the film.”
However, for those who really need an opening crawl for Rogue One, you can sleep peacefully. Thanks to them Internets, a fan created an opening crawl which captures the beginning of Rogue One Perfectly. Writer and reporter Andrew Shackley write the crawl and used an online tool to create his own crawl.
“The Jedi are all but extinct, the Republic has fallen and in their wake, the Galactic Empire has engulfed the far reaches of the galaxy in fear. Persecuted members of the Old Republic have been thrust into hiding. Only members of the REBEL ALLIANCE dare take a stand against the ruthless Imperial forces. Deep in the Outer Rim territories, the dastardly Director Krennic has discovered the location of a long lost friend; one capable of completing the Empire’s most powerful weapon yet…”
