Doctor Strange was a huge hit for Marvel Studios back in November, and that’s good because Marvel was in desperate need for a hit. Hah! Of course, they aren’t. Doctor Strange was the latest in a long line of successes for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as it was expected to be, so when next might we see the good doctor? Surely another Marvel hero could use a hand in a mystic arts matter in the near future, right? Well, it turns out you’re correct. Dr. Strange will be appearing in a Marvel movie in 2017, and you can probably guess which one it is.
If you stayed through to the end on Doctor Strange, then you probably saw the post credits scene where Thor (Chris Hemsworth) visits Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) at the Sanctum Sanctorum in Greenwich. You also might remember an article we did back in the fall where we posted a photo of Thor wandering around New York (really Brisbane) with Dr. Strange’s address written on a business card. It was enough to make you wonder, was Thor going to meet the Doctor at some point in Thor: Ragnarok? “Thor: Ragnarok in November brings together Thor, the Hulk, and Doctor Strange to face off against intergalactic baddies both familiar and new,” writes D23 in a new post.
It seems rather unlikely that Ragnarok is going to be a full-blown three-way for these heroes, but it seems very likely that the post credits scene in Strange will serve the same function as scene between Cap and Falcon at the end of Ant-Man. We know that Ragnarok director Taika Waititi himself directed the post-credit scene, but is it possible that it was not a standalone, and really just ripped wholesale from the forthcoming Thor movie? It seems likely. Perhaps Thor’s visit to the Sanctum Sanctorum will get more from Strange than just a bottomless mug of ale. Perhaps he needs Strange to send him on his intergalactic journey. I guess we’ll find out…
Thor: Ragnarok will be in theatres everywhere on November 3.
