James Gunn Wanted to Do ‘Moon Knight’ Movie Too

When Marvel Studios announced that they were doing Guardians of the Galaxy as part of their Phase 2 slate, a lot of fans had a simple question: WTF?! Sure, the Guardians have long been a staple of the comic book world, but if you were to make a list of Marvel characters to turn give their own movies, the Guardians would probably not make the Top 20. But then again, neither would Moon Knight. But there is one person who saw the value of Guardians of the Galaxy and made them marques names, and it turns out it’s the same guy that pitched Marvel on a Moon Knight movie, James Gunn.

During one of his perennial Twitter Q&As, a fan asked about squeezing Moon Knight into a Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Gunn said…

He’s probably right. Moon Knight has actually more in common with Batman than he does with the space-faring Guardians. Moon Knight was created by Doug Moench and Don Perlin in 1975, and was cast as a former mercenary given new life by the Ancient Egyptian moon god to fight crime with increased strength, agility and vitality depending on the phases of the moon. It would not be outside the realm of possibility to see a dark and gritty Moon Knight set in the street-level realm of Marvel’s Netflix series, but seeing Moon Knight board the Milano is highly unlikely. Even Gunn says so, and unfortunately he’s too busy a guy to make his Moon Knight movie.

When not engaging with fans on social media, Gunn is presently working on post-production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which will be in theatres everywhere on May 5.
