The Pacific Rim sequel, now called Pacific Rim: Uprising, is presently before the cameras in Australia. The cameras are being overseen by accomplished cinematographer Dan Mindel, whose talented eye has been used on Star Trek and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so naturally he’s a man who’s proud of his work. Like many in the entertainment business, he shares that work with updates on social media, but a recent post on Instagram might have shared more than the impression that Mindel is having fun on the set of the giant robots versus giant aliens sequel.

On the above Instagram post you’ll note that the camera has a cast list taped to the side. Scott Eastwood and Cailee Spaeny, who were previously announced as cast members in the film, are listed near the top, but underneath you’ll note three familiar names from the original 2013 Pacific Rim.

Although nothing has been officially announced through the production, it seems that Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman will be returning for Uprising. In Guillermo del Toro‘s film, Kikuchi played Mako Mori, a jaeger pilot and adopted daughter of Idris Elba’s character; Day and Gorman, meanwhile, played bickering scientists with the jaeger program. This is the first confirmation we’ve had that members of the first film’s cast will be featured in the sequel (but that’s always been the rumour).

Even more curiously, the cast list also seems to include Karl Urban, which would be the first we’ve heard of the Star Trek and Dredd star being involved in the production. This maybe confirmation bias and extremely wishful thinking talking on our part, and the picture quality kind of obscures the last name, but there is definitely an actor named “Karl” with some kind of role in the film. Is it Karl Urban? Who knows? but the evidence, such as it is, is compelling. We do know that John Boyega is the star of the film, but status of the previous film’s star Charlie Hannum is unknown.

Pacific Rim: Uprising, directed by Steven S. DeKnight, will be in theatres everywhere on February 23, 2018.
