After a few months of wild speculation, sourceless rumors, and multiple postings of that same old ‘Sad Batfleck’ picture, we have an actual update on the semi-confirmed forthcoming Ben Affleck written-directed-staring solo Batman movie.
Matt Damon’s better half was on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night (Jan 9) promoting a sadly non-Batman related film, Live By Night (come on, the title is sooooo close,) and offered a brief statement on the status of the much-scrutinized DCEU production.
When Jimmy brought out the recently released Justice League team photo, Ben took it as an opportunity to clear the air and add his needed perspective to a story that has been stoking internet arguments around the Dark Knight’s next solo cinematic outing for months.
Did he admit that the film is a script-less nightmare twisting in a pain filled limbo the likes of which will surely destroy the WB/DC Films movie universe? Nope. In fact, it was rather clear that he’s aware of the speculation surrounding the movie and also a little vexed over how a film that is still without an official release date can garner this much attention.
“I’m going to direct the next Batman, we’re working on it…[inaudible]. It’s one of those things that’s really frustrating, because like, with Live By Night it took me a year and a half to write it and get it ready and I worked really hard and-it’s just nobody gave a sh-t. No one was like, ‘Where’s Live By Night!?’ But with Batman, I keep on getting, ‘Where’s the f–king Batman?!” and I’m like, Whoa, I’m workin’, give me a second!’“
So, while rumors swirl about how the films unannounced release date will be pushed back to another unannounced date and his repeated affirmations that he won’t make a Batman movie without a deserving script are typically translated by the internet “Freak-Out Generator” into, “THERE IS NO SCRIPT FOR THIS MOVIE THAT IS STILL BEING MADE/WRITTEN!! EVERYONE PANIC AND USE EXCLAMATION POINTS TO EXCESS!!!!”, it’s nice to actually get a little from the Bat himself.
In fact, the short time Caped Crusader/long time Red Sox fan had similar things to say when he spoke with IGN recently. Offering insight into a schedule that has included filming Live By (K)night and The Accountant, (and press for both those films as well as Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice,) PLUS the actual freakin’ Justice League movie that was in production.
It’s safe to say Ben’s been a little busy the past few months. The star did note, however, that as far as the Batman script goes there is “great stuff in it now” and that it needs to get “better and better.”
Dear god, he said that it needs to get better. Clearly, that means that it is not good now and we should start an online petition to have him deported…
Or, we go with the concrete irrefutable news that Ben Affleck is making a Batman movie and, by his own admission and definition, working very hard to get it ‘right.’ This while the multiple Oscar-winning writer/director keeps a busy schedule.
Hell, Affleck is in talks with Fox to direct and star in a remake of Witness for the Prosecution, as well, so it might even be a little longer before Affleck suits up as the Dark Knight (well, not counting all the DCEU films that are already in the works that he may or may not appear in.)
Ben Affleck’s Batman movie will hit theaters whenever it freakin hits theaters.
