Aside from a few comments from Adam Driver and the news that the late Carrie Fisher shot her scenes in time to be included, there hasn’t been a lot of infomation floating around about what fans can expect from Star Wars: Episode VIII. For a franchise with such a huge following, those in the know have done an impressive job of keeping the movie’s secrets under wraps. Now director Rian Johnson has offered USA Today some choice comments, which have given fans plenty to mull over while they’re waiting for the December release. He announced that the new movie would take place immediately after The Force Awakens ends. Even though the last film left with a lot hanging in the air around the main characters, there was no guarantee that it would be addressed immediately. After all, Star Wars isn’t exactly known for its straightforward chronology and there is a full thirty year time gap, in the Star Wars universe, between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.
“I don’t want to skip ahead two years,” said Johnson. “I want to see the very next moment of what happens.”
He also offered a glimpse into what the plot might have in store. He described the relationship between Luke Skywalker and Rey as “a large part of the movie” and said that it will also explore Rey’s journey as she processes how the events of the last film have impacted her:
“Part of what’s she’s dealing with is the realization that she has this power and this gift. She’s taking her first step to coming to terms with this thing inside her that she never knew was there and is just starting to reveal its potential.”
Seeing Luke Skywalker step into the shoes of a mentor will certainly be an interesting turn of events for the series and there are plenty of fans already itching to find out what the new movie will reveal about his mysterious story since we last saw him.
