Now that he has sold his baby Lucasfilm to Disney, George Lucas has a lot of free time on his hands. Most people would just play golf or go to the beach. The Star Wars creator, however, wants to expand his legacy and build a place for all his fans to view and appreciate his legacy. Lucas would be financing the project himself (after all, he is worth more than $5 billion) promising to put up to $1 billion of his money into the museum. More than 40,000 paintings, drawings, and other memorabilia would be donated to the museum. The museum location was a choice between San Francisco and Los Angeles for quite some time. It looks like a city has been chosen.
Lucas had ties to both San Francisco and Los Angeles, but decided that Los Angeles would be the city for his museum. Organizers and developers in Los Angeles were very happy with the selection.
“We have been humbled by the overwhelmingly positive support we received from both San Francisco and Los Angeles during our selection process” -Museum organizers in an official statement.
“Millions of Angelenos and visitors will enjoy an extraordinary collection anchored in storytelling – an art that carries so much meaning in the history and legacy of Los Angeles.” -Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.
The museum is expected to house items Lucas has obtained from The Wizard Of Oz, Casablanca, and many other films (including Star Wars).
