If you’re one of those people that enjoyed following along HBO‘s Game of Thrones and comparing that to the written words of the A Song of Fire and Ice series by creator George R.R. Martin, these are frustrating times. Season 6 of the show was the first to proceed without a published novel as a blueprint, and while the showrunners, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, have the benefit of Martin’s insight, fans have got to know that the way Martin’s going to lay out his story will be different from the way Benioff and Weiss laid out their TV version of it. Will this be the year we find out how?
Martin took to his LiveJournal blog recently to give an update on how work is progressing on the sixth tome of A Song of Fire and Ice, The Winds of Winter. “[It’s] Not done yet, but I’ve made progress. But not as much as I hoped a year ago, when I thought to be done by now,” Martin wrote.” I think it will be out this year. (But hey, I thought the same thing last year).”
If you’re keeping score at home, it was 2011 when Martin published the fifth volume of the series, A Dance With Dragon; at the time, the HBO series was in the process of delivering its second season. Now, Thrones is entering it’s final two seasons, which are ostensibly based on the final book of the series, A Dream of Spring, which if there’s anything written about it at all, it’s probably just a rough outline. It seems pretty unlikely that Martin will not be done the book series by the time the TV series draws to a close next year, and if you’ve ever seen the physical hardcover books then you know they’re far from chapbook size. The real question is, will The Winds of Winter be finished before the end of the TV series? That’s still pretty tough to answer.
We’ll wait and see if The Winds of Winter will hit bookstore shelves sometime this year. Meanwhile, the seventh season of Game of Thrones is expected to premiere sometime this summer on HBO.
