When it comes to anime, one of the most reputable studios in Japan is the famed, Studio Ghibli. Studio Ghibli is responsible for some of the greatest animated films ever made outside the United States. My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Spirited Away are only a few examples this studio’s magnificent lineup, and fans of their work will soon be able to appreciate another entry only this time, it’s going to be a television series.
Goro Muyazaki (Tales from Earthsea and From Up On Poppy Hill), the son of legendary anime director Hayao Miyazaki (Who is responsible for just about everything Studio Ghibli has ever done) has put together a series called Ronja, The Robber’s Daughter, which is a 26-episode series set to debut in its entirety on Amazon Prime later this month. The series is an adaptation of Astrid Lindgren’s book of the same name about a thief’s daughter who befriends the son of her father’s rival (Think Romeo and Juliet, but throw in an enchanted forest for good measure and toss in a somewhat happier ending). Here is the official synopsis released from Amazon:
The daughter of a professional robber, Ronja realizes the complicated nature of her father’s profession when she befriends Birk, the child of a rival tribe. Ronja struggles to balance the relationship with her family and the bond with her self-proclaimed brother Birk as she comes to understand the intricate issues of family and friendship and how differences can be overcome with the help of love and understanding.
Ronja, The Robber’s Daughter debuted in Japan in 2014 and it has taken this long to assemble an amazing cast of voice actors to bring it across the pond to an English-speaking audience. It was previously released as a dub in German and to Spanish audiences via subtitled. Narrating the English dub of the series is X-Files alum, Gillian Anderson. Anderson has some experience working for the Studio having previously voiced Moro in the American dubbed version of Princess Mononoke.
Ronja, The Robber’s Daughter is Studio Ghibli’s first television series and also represents Amazon’s first import of a Ghibli product to air exclusively for its members. Like their other work, traditional cell animation is blended seamlessly with computer-generated animation to create a truly beautiful animation experience. Ronja, The Robber’s Daughter is set to release in its entirety on January 27th for customers with an Amazon Prime account.
