Terrible and obvious puns aside, Lucasfilm has made it official today, Woody Harrelson is joining the cast of the upcoming, untitled Han Solo movie, the second Star Wars Story film to follow-up on the tremendous success of Rogue One. Although it’s been rumored for a couple of weeks now, Harrelson now joins an already impressive cast that includes Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover and Emilia Clarke who will tell the previously unknown (canonically anyway) true story of how Han Solo became the best swindler in the galaxy and the legendary captain of the Millennium Falcon.
“We couldn’t be more excited to work with an artist with as much depth and range as Woody,” said the film’s directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller in a press release. “His ability to find both humor and pathos, often in the same role, is truly unique. He is also very good at ping pong.” Harrelson’s earned his nerd bonafides in movies like Zombieland, The Hunger Games saga, and the upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes, in which he plays the human antagonist.
Of course, no one outside of the production knows who Harrelson is playing in the film, but the rumour has been that he’ll be portraying some kind of mentor figure to Han Solo. Ehrenreich will be playing this younger version of the character made famous by Harrison Ford in the original Star Wars in 1977. Glover will be playing the younger version of Solo’s friend and associate Lando Calrissian, while Clarke will play another as-yet unrevealed role. Presumably, Chewbacca will be involved in some way too, but his participation has not yet been confirmed.
The Han Solo movie will begin shooting shortly in London for a 2018 release.
