To capture the synergy and hype around Marvel Studios‘ very popular collection of Netflix shows, Marvel Comics is going to be releasing a new comic book version of The Defenders this coming June. In the past, the comic book Defenders has featured the likes of Doctor Strange, the Silver Surfer, the Hulk, and Namor, but they’re all now heroes that have appeared on the big screen, or may still have their own movie. So naturally, this new comic line-up is going to reflect the upcoming Netflix show, and it will feature the team-up of Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. Shall we check out a sneak peak?

The new series will be realized by the Civil War II team of writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist David Marquez. Bendis, of course, has written all four heroes in various capacities in either their own solo book or as part of a team like The New Avengers. Now, according to a Marvel press release, the four heroes are teaming up to take on a terrifying new criminal empire that is poisoning Hell’s Kitchen, and soon the whole of New York City. What is this threat? Well, that would be telling! You will likely have to read the comic when it comes out to learn more. In the meantime, Marvel brass is very excited about the new series.

“As opposed to other more global or galactic Super Hero groups, the Defenders are very much focused on the streets, on the neighborhoods, on the community,” says Senior Vice-President and Executive Editor, Tom Brevoort. “Their battles are no less fiercely fought or consequential, but the arena is a very different one, and the stakes more personal. Brian will be building upon the relationships that he established years ago in New Avengers to create something unique and primary within the Marvel Universe.”

“[The Defenders] is a smorgasbord of everything I truly love about Marvel Comics,” added Bendis. “And to keep the team of David, Justin [Ponsor], and myself together for another creative challenge is so exciting!  We’ve been planning this book for well over a year and we’re so excited to show you what we think the next phase of the gritty marvel streets will have to offer.”

Once again, The Defenders will be in comic book stores this June. The Netflix show – starring Charlie Cox, Finn Jones, Mike Colter and Krysten Ritter  – will be released in its entirety later this year.
