Prior to its release in 2016, not much was known about Stranger Things and it looks like season two will be no different. Little has leaked out of the Duffer brothers’ camp about what we can expect for 2017’s blast of nostalgia mixed horror and suspense, but that doesn’t mean we are completely in the Upside Down on what to expect.
What we have learned is that the upcoming season will expand on the characters from the first so we will get to see what happened in the lives of the kids and adults. Returning to the series are Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Gaten Matarazzo, and Caleb McLauglin. Unfortunately for everyone excited about those “Justice for Barb” memes out there, it doesn’t look like Shannon Purser will be reprising her role.
New cast members entering the series will be the likes of 80s legends Sean Astin (Goonies) and Paul Reiser (Aliens) with comedian Brett Gelman coming along for the ride. As far as the story, we don’t know much at this point. Producer Shawn Levy recently gave an interview about the upcoming episodes:
“Season 2 is bigger and potentially darker in its stakes. The threat, which in Season 1 was to Will Byers, has grown. That’s all I’m going to say! But, I will say Season 2 has a bigger cast and is definitely loyal to the kind of magical storytelling that we established in the first season. It’s character-based and still about our core group of characters.”
What little has come out of the Duffer brothers indicates that the second season will pick up approximately one year after the events of the first season, sometime in the fall of 1984.
Unfortunately, that isn’t much to go on, but we do get a glimpse into what might come. Since the primary threat from the first season was pointed at Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) who was stuck in the Upside Down and not really to the rest of the characters, it may be possible that the regurgitated slug from the last shot of season one might just cause some chaos for the rest of the townspeople of Hawkins, Indiana when season two drops sometime this year.
