We haven’t heard a lot  about James Bond since the last chapter in the venerable franchise, Spectre, opened to decent box office but disappointed fan and critical appraisals back in November 2015. Not only have we not heard anything about what should be the slam-dunk Bond 25, we don’t know if the current Bond, actor Daniel Craig, will be returning for it. Craig has said some things that indicate he’s in no mood for more spy stuff, so in lieu of confirmation, we’ve been forced to speculate about who might play Bond next. That’s a long list, and it looks like it might be a little longer.

While talking to The Daily Beast, Tom Hardy said he’d be interested in talking about being interested about playing Bond, but apparently there’s some kind of actor’s curse… “You know, there’s a saying amongst us in the fraternity of acting, and in the fellowship of my peer group, that if you talk about it you’re automatically out of the race,” he said. “So I can’t possibly comment on that one! If I mention it, it’s gone.”

What Hardy did talk about though was his preferred director for a Bond film. “But Chris Nolan, what a fantastic director for a Bond movie,” he explained. “Because Daniel is so good, and what [Sam] Mendes and Barbara [Broccoli] have done has been so impressive, that it would be a very hard re-imagination to follow after. I wonder what the next installment of that franchise would become, and I think when you mention someone like Christopher Nolan, that’s a very powerful figure to bring into that world who could bring something new and create something profound…again.”

There were rumours a few years ago that Nolan was under consideration as a potential Bond director, but it seems fairly unlikely that at this point in his career Nolan would want to go back into the morass of franchise filmmaking, especially if he’s not allowed to do it his own way. The closest thing Nolan will likely get to a Bond film is the chalet sequence in Inception, which was supposedly inspired a lot by the Bond films of the Roger Moore era. So while Hardy might be a “maybe” for Bond, Nolan is a “doubtful” for Bond movie director.

Tom Hardy can currently be seen in the BBC/FX series Taboo. Christopher Nolan’s next film Dunkirk is in theatres everywhere this summer.
