Filming started today in Atlanta on one of the largest projects in movie history, the much anticipated all star crossover event films Avengers: Infinity War and an untitled sequel that are being shot back to back. The culmination of eight years of world building by Marvel Studios that started with a gamble on an  former fallen movie star with a less than stellar reputation began shooting today with an estimated budget in the area of $500 million, making it one of the largest productions ever with, by the time it releases, an unprecedented 18 unique films tied into the film’s cinematic universe.

The list of characters, from supporting stars to big name talent, and combined backstories is approaching Proustian lengths as there are still four films (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, and Black Panther) set to be released before Infinity War hits the big screen and another four, at least, including the untitled 4th Avengers feature on the docket through 2019. No specific details have been released regarding the plot but it’s apparent from his occasional appearances so far that everything is building towards an eventual showdown with Marvel supervillain Thanos, who is trying to gain control of all of the Infinity Stones in order to combine their power with the Infinity Gauntlet, making him all powerful and omniscient.

No complete cast list has been released but it has at least been confirmed that the bulk of the original Avengers lineup will be included as well as a crossover with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, and a possible appearance by the newest incarnation of Spider-Man portrayed by Tom Holland. The films are being directed by Captain America: Winter Soldier and Civil War helmers Anthony and Joe Russo with scripts written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, both MCU veterans at this point. Kevin Feige and company have yet to completely miss the mark with a release but even with the built in audience and a list of talent long enough to make the Harry Potter Film Universe look like quaint independent filmmaking, Infinity War is aiming to be the highest grossing film of all time or die trying. The film releases May 4th, 2018.
