In the comic books, X-Men and Cloak and Dagger are kind of related because it was found out that Cloak and Dagger were actually latent mutants whose powers were activated when they were exposed to experimental drugs. So it’s appropriate then today that both should appear in the news together about their TV adaptations, even though Cloak and Dagger’s mutantness will likely never be discussed on their upcoming Freeform series because of rights issues. Still, we’ve got TV news for both X-Men and Cloak and Dagger, and while one has definitely found a director, the other might have found its two stars.
Let’s start with the confirmed news. Deadline is reporting that no less than Bryan Singer will direct the X-Men inspired pilot for Fox from Burn Notice creator Matt Nix. Singer, who has directed four out of six of the big screen X-Men films, was already onboard the series as an executive producer, but he just closed the deal to direct the pilot too. The new series will follow two human parents whose mutant children become targeted by the government, forcing the whole family to go on the run and join an underground community of mutants. No other details of the story and characters have yet been provided.
As for Cloak and Dagger, according to MCU Exchange (via Cinema Blend) the supposed casting for the series is down to two actors: Noah Gray-Cabey as Cloak and Debbie Ryan as Dagger. Gray-Cabey has appeared on My Wife and Kids, and more recently on Heroes Reborn and Code Black. Meanwhile, Ryan is Disney Channel royalty with roles on The Wizards of Waverly Place, Suite Life on Deck, and Jessie, so she should be right at home on Freeform (the former ABC Family). Cloak and Dagger will follow two street-wise teen heroes who escape the mob captors testing a dangerous new drug on them, and other street kids, and decide to use their super-powers to fight evil. The show is expected to go into production next month.
We’ll have more news on both projects as it becomes available…
