When it comes to the world of Muppets and old-school puppetry, look no further than the amazingly talented Frank Oz (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Little Shop of Horrors, and What About Bob?). Oz’s career has encompassed his talented work as a puppeteer, voice-over artist (This is the man who voiced Yoda for crying out loud!), and director. Oz hasn’t directed a film since 2007’s Death at a Funeral but has taken the helm of a project near and dear to his heart. Oz has put together Muppet Guys Talking: Secrets Behind the Show the Whole World Watched, a documentary all about the secrets behind one of the most popular variety shows of all time: The Muppet Show.
The documentary will look at the original Muppet Show as seen from some of the first puppeteers to work on the series. Along with Oz will be Dave Goelz (The Muppets., Inside Out, and Fraggle Rock), Fran Brill (Sesame Street, Doug, and Being There), Jerry Nelson (Sesame Street, Muppets Tonight, and The Dark Crystal), and Bill Barretta (Dinosaurs, Kim Possible, and The Muppets.) who actually didn’t work on the original series, but certainly adds value to the discussion due to his experience working with the characters since the early 1990s. Here is the synopsis for the documentary:
Five of the original Muppet performers come together for the first time ever to share behind-the-scenes secrets of the Muppets. Includes rare performance footage, surprising stories and insights into how Jim led his team to produce legendary work.
Fans of The Muppet Show and even people who grew up after the series ended can appreciate the masterful work that went into the characters and personalities of the Muppet family. The film will premiere at the 2017 South by Southwest Film Festival being held in Austin, Texas March 10th – 19th.
