This is not usually a music site, but sometimes there’s a fine line between movie news and music news and this is one of those times. In a little over a month, the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast opens in theatres everywhere, and not only will the movie feature three new songs written by Alan Menken and Tim Rice, but it will feature new versions of the old ones, like the now classic theme song. We got a taste of the new version in the most recent trailer for Beauty and the Beast, but now you can listen to that new tale as old as time in its entirety.
This new version of the title song, “Beauty and the Beast,” performed by Ariana Grande and John Legend, can be heard in the video below. Give it a listen.
As to the real question though, can the Grande/Legend duet out-ballad the original? Céline Dion and Peabo Bryson performed “Beauty and the Beast” back in 1991, and while Bryson was pretty well established in the music business having put out 15 albums in 25 years, Dion was new commodity back in ’91 having just barely broken out of the Quebec music scene. Of course, she’s the queen of ballads now, so there’s some pretty big competition here over “Who Did it Best?” But why take out word for it? Give a listen to the Dion/Bryson duet below and compare for yourself.
Beauty an the Beast, starring Emma Watson, Dan Stevens and Luke Evans, opens nationwide on March 17.
