It’s a sad day for Battlestar Galactica fans as actor Richard Hatch passed away today at the age of 71. Best known for his role as Captain Apollo in the original BSG series, Hatch passed away surrounded by family and friends due to an extended illness. He would later go on to play the character Tom Zarek in the 2004 version of the show. Even though the show ended in 2009, he would continue to host panels and fan discussions for the show. A small example for his love for the show and it’s fans. He will surely be missed.

After the original series ended in 1979, he would go on to write several novels within the same universe and even developed Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming, a short he created in 1999. He would also go on to guest on other shows such as The Love Boat, MacGyver, and Dynasty.

Interestingly enough, acting was not the first choice of profession for Hatch. His original dreams had himself becoming an Olympic Pole Vaulter. Growing up, Hatch was known to be a very shy person. In fact, he once flunked an oral interpretation class because he just couldn’t get the words to come out of his mouth. He eventually overcame his fears and would go on to help other actors struggling with similar issues.

Richard Hatch is survived by his son. So say we all.
