If there’s one thing that was lacking in previous incarnations of Star Wars films, it was women. Think about the first three films for a moment. There were three ladies in the first film and one of them was burned to cinders right in the beginning. With the leading ladies of the new Star Wars flicks taking the spotlight, it seems that the upcoming film featuring our favorite scruffy-looking nerf herder will premiere a special new lady for Star Wars fans… a female droid.
Last week, news broke that Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Broadchurch, Crashing, and Fleabag) would be joining the cast as a motion-capture character, but details were lacking so there was no way of knowing if she was playing some sort of alien creature or something else. Well, it seems like something else is going to be the first significant female droid in the Star Wars universe. This news is not 100% confirmed at this point, but the leak comes from Jeff Sneider, a trade reporter who works for Tracking Board, who indicated Waller-Bridge will definitely be taking on the role of “The first significantly-featured female droid in Star Wars history.”
The news of a significant female droid is something new for Star Wars, but Waller-Bridge’s droid will not be the very first female droid to appear. Over the years, some droids have been speculated to be female but these characters remained mainly in the background. One significant droid who made it to the big screen was R2-KT in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The droid was created by the cosplay fan group, 501st Legion/R2 Builders Club for a little girl named Katie Johnson who passed away due to a brain tumor. This was a touching homage to a young fan.
Of course, this being a Star Wars film, not a lot of details have leaked. The untitled Han Solo movie is slated to release on May 25th, 2018. Keep an eye on NerdBastards.com for all your Star Wars related news and information.
