John Wick: Chapter 2 opened with a very respectable third place finish of $30 million this past weekend at the very competitive box office. That likely all but assures a third chapter for the unretired retired assassin, but are there any other Keanu Reeves franchises out there waiting to get a third chapter greenlit? It started about 30 years ago, when two California dudes piled into a time travelling phone box (a different time travelling phone box) in an effort to save their history grade and the future of mankind, but three decades later, according to Reeves, things may be completely different, but kinda the same.
While appearing on The Graham Norton Show last week, Reeves said that the story for Bill and Ted 3 will find the Wyld Stallyns in their 50s, struggling with midlife and still trying to fulfill their destiny, and then things get taken up a notch!
“The writers came up with a story and we’re trying to make it. It would be Bill and Ted in their 50s, and that just makes me laugh right there,” said Reeves. “There’s a cool story. Basically, they’re supposed to write a song to save the world and they haven’t done that yet. So the pressure of having to save the world, their marriages are falling apart, their kids are kind of mad at them. But then someone comes from the future and tells them if they don’t write the song it’s just not the world, it’s the universe. So they have to save the universe because time is breaking apart. So then elements of the past come in.”
Bill and Ted in their 50s? It checks out. Reeves is 52, and his co-star Alex Winters is 51. Talk about Bill & Ted 3 has persisted since at least 2012 when Galaxy Quest’s Dean Parisot was hired to direct the film from a script by Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson. The rumoured setting of the film is supposed to be London, but at this point there are really no confirmable details of the film, and there’s no studio or distributor presently behind it as well. For now, Bill & Ted 3 is as much a fantasy as the idea that rock and roll can usher in a future of peace of compassion, but then again, who knows.
In the meantime, you can still check out John Wick: Chapter 2 in theatres everywhere.
