Later on this year, we will see the next installment of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), Justice League. In the aftermath of Batman v Superman, Bruce Wayne will be gathering various metahumans to form a team to deal with an upcoming threat. As in most cinematic universe films, characters from previous films will be continuing their roles. We can count on Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman of course. In addition, we will be meeting new characters that will join the Justice League like Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg. That pretty much covers the superheroes, but what about the supporting players. The first two DCEU movies have dealt primarily in Metropolis, so many of the supporting characters were from Superman lore.
We know that Lois Lane and Martha Kent will be back, given how important they are to Superman, but what about Perry White? The editor of The Daily Planet Perry White (Laurence Fishburne) is Clark Kent’s boss and sometimes a thorn in his side as he pushes him to report various stories has been a good addition to the DCEU films. However, there has been no information whether Fishburne would be in the upcoming Justice League film, until now.
The problem with amassing such a big film with big name stars is that there are scheduling conflicts. Apparently, Zach Snyder wanted Fishburne to film in the upcoming movie, and he only needed him for a day. Fishburne was recently promoting John Wick: Chapter 2 and was asked by the LA Times about his involvement in the upcoming film.
“They asked me to come for a day, but I couldn’t work it out, schedule-wise. And really, what do you need the newspaperman in Justice League for? You want to see the Flash. You want to see Aquaman. You want to see Wonder Woman. You want to see the Lantern.”
First off, does this mean that Green Lantern will be in the film? Did he spoil something?
When asked about superhero films in general, Fishburne also stated that he’s not one of those “F*ck Marvel” type of actors as he has an appreciation for his distinguished competition.
“We’ve been waiting 35 years for these [characters] to show up on the screen. What were they doing over there? Marvel has been kicking their ass. This is the comic-book geek in me, who has a collection of comic books. I’ve been waiting to see these people on-screen forever.”
Of course, the elephant in the room is the poor reception the DCEU films have received. Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Suicide Squad have been regarded as “failures,” even though they have made some serious bank at the box office. Fishburne also defended the DCEU films as well as director Zach Snyder.
“Jesse Eisenberg, this little nebbishy guy, as Lex Luthor? For me, that’s a genius move,” Fishburne said. “And the whole thing with Martha Kent and Martha Wayne? I don’t know, man, I must be sentimental but that’s some heartwarming [stuff] to me. So I don’t get it.”
