As its air date creeps ever closer at 1/50000th impulse speed, trickles of information have been released about the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery. Details have been released today about three new cast members who are going to be putting on a Starfleet uniform and getting onboard the USS Discovery. Added to the cast are Maulik Pancholy (30 Rock, Weeds, and Phineas and Ferb), Terry Serpico (Army Wives, The Inspectors, and Sneaky Pete), and Sam Vartholomeos (Debuting on Star Trek: Discovery). Unlike other casting announcements from major productions, CBS has provided details as to who each new member of Starfleet will play. Details after the bump.
Taking the role as the ship’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Nambue, will be Maulik Pancholy. Vartholomeos will be joining the crew as Ensign Connor and Serpico will become Admiral Anderson. Both the doctor and the Ensign will be starting off as members of the Starship Shenzhou, not the Discovery. It is not currently known where the Shenzhou will fit in a series called Discovery, but it is known that another cast member, Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Sunshine) has already been identified as playing Captain Georgiou of the same starship.
There hasn’t been a lot confirmed about the plot of Star Trek: Discovery, but some bits of information have leaked out. Here’s what we know so far:
- The show will be set 10 years prior to James T. Kirk’s 5-year journey
- An unnamed incident that has been a part of Star Trek lore will be the basis of the series’ plot.
- Whatever the incident may be, it was mentioned in the original series.
- Former showrunner Brian Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies, and Dead Like Me) dropped the above hints so they are pretty solid (Even though they are rather weak).
The premiere season of Star Trek: Discovery is slated for release sometime this year on CBS All Access, but a specific date has yet to be released. Fortunately, shooting has already begun and production is in full swing. Keep an eye on NerdBastards.com for all of your upcoming Star Trek: Discovery news.
