Sometimes, saying goodbye can be difficult. This is just as true when you’re saying it to Mister Tiddles before putting him into a shoebox and burying him in the garden as it is when you’re saying it to a hairy, chain-smoking, invulnerable mutant with giant claws on his hands. It’s a feeling that Hugh Jackman now knows only too well. When Logan is released, he’ll be saying goodbye to a character that he’s portrayed in 9 movies.Hugh “Huge Action” Jackman recently spoke to Entertainment Tonight about doing Wolverine Justice, what the character means to him and the importance of passing on his legacy.
“There is not a frame of this film where I can’t say I didn’t put everything into it,” Jackman said.
“I couldn’t have made this film if I didn’t make the decision within myself that this was the last one. I just didn’t compromise on anything. I was a pain to a lot of people, because I don’t get another shot at this. This is a character I love. I owe my career to this character.”
Hugh Jackman may be bidding farewell to the Xavier mansion, but Patrick Stewart reassured fans that the Professor is very much still in residence.
“Hugh has raised the flag that says goodbye. I haven’t done that yet,” Stewart said.
From what we know of Logan, it isn’t just a swan song for a hero, it’s about passing the torch to the next generation. In this case the new slicer and dicer on the block will be Laura/X23. In his interview, Jackman talked about how important it was to find the right actress. It’s no small acting feat. Playing Laura means taking on a character who, at an extremely young age, finds herself burdened with The Wolverine’s legacy.
“That was one thing I was a pain about,” Jackman admitted. “I was like, ‘Dude, this is the greatest idea, but how are we going to pull this off? How do we find that girl?’ And we did.”
Jackman would eventually find his Laura in the form of 12-year old actress Dafne Keen. Keen will play wolverine’s clone X-23, although we do not know yet how closely her character will mirror that of the comics.
In the film Laura will arrive on the Mexican Border, on the run from as-yet unidentified forces. Here she’ll find the hideout of Professor X, his health ailing, being cared for by a world-weary Logan. Their attempt to hide themselves away will come to an abrupt end when Laura brings the world right to their doorstep, and Logan is forced to bring those claws out of retirement one last time, and do battle with old enemies both literal and psychological.
Most of the film’s plot is still firmly under wraps, but we do know that these enemies will include The Reavers and Weapon X.
Alongside Jacma,. Stewart and Keen, Logan will feature Eriq La Salle, Stephen Merchant, Elise Neal and Elizabeth Rodriguez. It’ll hit theaters on March 3rd 2017. It’s not been an entirely pleasant journey for Jackson’s Wolverine. Sure, there was the odd stinker like Origins which seemed to genuinely be curious to see how many classic characters it could completely bungle, but even in the better X-Men films it often felt like Wolverine was on something of a short leash. We’re glad that, from the sounds of it, Jackson has fought to give Wolverine the send-off he truly deserves..
