You may recall the character Jar Jar Binks. I know, I know, you’ve been trying very, very hard to forget almost every last detail of the Star Wars prequel trilogy for the last dozen years, but I have to remind you that he’s a thing and that he’s real. So what the heck happened to Jar Jar after the end credits rolled on Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith? Interesting you should ask, because the fate of Jar Jar Binks just so happens to be a point of interest in an upcoming Star Wars novel. Reader discretion advised, it just might make you feel sorry for the old Gungan.

In the upcoming novel Empire’s End, the final part of the book trilogy Aftermath that chronicles the canonical end of the Galactic Civil War following Return of the Jedi, we catch-up with Jar Jar Binks on Naboo, and it’s not great. Here’s an excerpt courtesy of Mashable:

A refugee boy named Mapo encounters a Gungan performing for kids on the streets, clowning around in a fountain twice a day while being studiously avoided by the grown-ups.  “Meesa Jar Jar,” says the clown when Mapo introduces himself.  The clown distracts the orphan from his own sadness by popping his eyes and bulging his cheeks, but is hiding a sadness of his own. “Jar Jar makin some uh-oh mistakens,” the Gungan says, explaining why he isn’t wanted anywhere either. “Desa hisen Naboo tink I help the uh-oh Empire.” He stares into the distance, suggesting he knows more than he’s saying.

Oh, Jar Jar knows some things alright. Like how he’s the one that put forward the motion to give Chancellor Palpatine special war powers that mobilized the clone troopers and put the Republic on the road to becoming the Empire. Now I know we all hate Jar Jar, or are otherwise just extremely disinterested in him, but to become an indentured clown meant to amuse orphaned and refugee kids? That’s cold. Even for the haters. Maybe Jar Jar will get happy ending, you’ll have to read the novel to be sure.

Star Wars Aftermath: Empire’s End will be on bookstore shelves on Tuesday.
