It has been half a decade since the world was treated to a new film from the Aliens franchise and fans are eagerly awaiting the return of the fearsome Xenomorph. Alien: Covenant has been in the works for a while and while some details have been leaked, not much is coming out regarding the story. Thankfully, 20th Century Fox released a 4-minute promotional clip introducing the crew that will be in the film (don’t worry, we will link to it after the bump). This release confirms the appearance of several highly anticipated actors and actresses but doesn’t supply much information about the plot. That being said, this is a major leak of epic proportions the nerd community can rejoice over.
The clip debuted during last night’s episode of Legion on FX as a nice surprise and sneak peek for the upcoming film. Watching this might at first seem like a trailer, but it is much more than that. The four-minute segment is the official/canon prologue for the film. It introduces the crew as they prepare for cryosleep in preparation for their mission. Without further ado, here’s the clip:
We are first introduced to the android David played by Michael Fassbender (300, X-Men: First Class, and Assassin’s Creed) who is reprising his role from Prometheus. Some other faces come into play to include Danny McBride (Eastbound & Down, This is the End, and Vice Principals) and a rather ill-looking James Franco (127 Hours, Spring Breakers, and Spider-Man).
The other cast members who are crewing the Covenant include Noomi Rapace (Prometheus, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows), Demian Bichir (The Hateful Eight, A Better Life, and The Heat), Katherine Waterston (Manhattan Romance, Steve Jobs, and Queen of Earth), Carmen Ejogo (Selma, Away We Go, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Amy Seimetz (The Girlfriend Experience, Lovesong, and The Killing), Jussie Smollett (North, The Mighty Ducks, and Underground), Callie Hernandez (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, La La Land, and Blair Witch), Nathaniel Dean (Somersault, Walking on Water, and Candy), Alexander England (Gods of Egypt, Parer’s War, and Wild Boys), Benjamin Rigby (Lion, That’s Not Me, and Bridge) and Billy Crudup (Watchmen, The Longest Week, and Thin Ice).
Alien Covenant is being directed by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, G.I. Jane, and Gladiator) who hasn’t set foot in the franchise since he released Prometheus in 2012. The film will serve as both a prequel to the first film, Alien, as well as a sequel to Prometheus. The plot, as we know it, involves the crew of the Covenant making their way across the galaxy on the first large-scale colony ship to cross such a vast distance. While they believe they have landed in paradise, it becomes apparent that the world they discover is inhabited by the David android from who is the sole survivor from the doomed Prometheus Mission… and he probably isn’t alone…
Alien Covenant is being released by 20th Century Fox and will premiere in the United States on May 19th, 2017.
