Things seemingly weren’t looking good for Ben Affleck‘s solo Batman movie. First there was the fallout of Batman v Superman which was panned by critics and rocked Affleck pretty hard – #SadAffleck. Then there was the uncertainty with the script, which Affleck had repeatedly said variations of “it’s ready when it’s ready” and “I won’t do it unless it’s perfect”. With the culminating pressure of starring in, writing, and directing one of the biggest comic book licenses of all time, Affleck had made the shocking announcement that he will no longer be directing The Batman. Some fans, of course, went into a tale spin over this, thinking the project was dead, that Affleck is done with Batman, and that he’s keeping his apathy silenced until Justice League rolls out.
Well, weary not Batfleck fans. The Batman is still on. The script is good. Affleck will once again don those Bat tights. And as word would have it, a replacement director has been confirmed.
Matt Reeves actually surfaced as the top pick to direct The Batman two weeks ago, but late last Friday news circled that talks between Reeves and Warner Bros. had fell apart and that the Studio was moving down the short list.
In an official statement on the matter, Reeves confirmed his involvement:
“I have loved the Batman story since I was a child. He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honored and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen.”
WB President and Chief Content Officer Tony Emmerich added:
“We are thrilled to have Matt Reeves taking the helm of Batman, the crown jewel of our DC slate. Matt’s deep roots in genre films and his evolution into an emotional world-building director make him the perfect filmmaker to guide the Dark Knight through this next journey.”
So there it is. The director best known for the Planet of The Apes (the new ones) will be taking on The Bat.
Now, with this confirmation, a lot of sites are taking note that neither Reeves of Emmerich made any mention to Affleck. Speculation and dumbfuckery took hold and now the thought is “Does this mean Affleck’s out?”. No, you nitwits. It doesn’t. Well, there probably IS truth to it, Ben probably is not enjoying being Batman right now because it has become insanely scrutinized. Even if he DOES want to quit (which is doubtful) it’s not that easy. He has a contract and there are BILLIONS OF DOLLARS ON HIS BROAD SEXY SHOULDERS.
Any doubt of Affleck quitting can be squashed by the man himself. The actor/director has 100% confirmed his involvement by sending out a Tweet welcoming Matt Reeves on board as his replacement in the director’s chair of The Batman. You can check out his Tweet, along with what appears to be a new image from either Batman V Superman or Justice League, below.
