It was a bold gambit, and it proved a great success for the CW last fall when they combined all four of their superhero shows into one mega week-long crossover event called “Invasion!”, for only the combined might of Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and The Legends of Tomorrow could defeat the Dominators. Well, work has already begun on next season’s crossover event, and one of the series’ executive producers says that’s in order to make logistical arrangements now to address a key issue with the previous crossover. From the sounds of it, if you’re looking for more adventures with the other heroes in Supergirl’s world, you’re going to get it.
While talking to Entertainment Weekly, Andrew Kreisberg said that CW head Mark Pedowitz has done the production a favour by picking up all four shows early; Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and The Legends of Tomorrow were all renewed in a sweep of established CW shows last month. This time last year, Supergirl was still a CBS show, so because of that, Kreisberg said, the series Supergirl didn’t have a prominent part in the planning process for “Invasion!”, but that’s going to change next year.
“The thing that we didn’t really plan on — because we weren’t aware that we were going to switch Supergirl from CBS to CW and it was really going to be part of it — that was the one show that didn’t have built-in shut-down days, so all the other ones did,” Kreisberg explained. “Melissa [Benoist] ended up being heavily in Flash and then in Arrow, so Supergirl was the one we needed to shut down the most and it was the one that we didn’t have any opportunity to. Now that we’ve gotten the early pickup and we’ve started designing the seasons, we’re building in those dark days, and actually more dark days on Supergirl than the other shows, to make it a little easier.”
So it sounds like more dark days on the set of Supergirl, which, surprisingly, is a good thing. Of course, it’s not surprising that the CW is going to do this all over again, especially since all four series had their most-watched episode during the week of the “Invasion!” crossover. Now the question is if Black Lightening, which was in development at Fox but is now being filmed for the CW, might somehow make an appearance in next year’s five-night (?) crossover. Time will tell.
Supergirl airs Mondays on the CW, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow on Tuesdays, and Arrow on Wednesdays.
