Given all the hype surrounding Deadpool 2, it’s a casting choice that fans are hungry to know the most. It’s been said since the post credits of Deadpool 1 that the time-traveling, cybernetic, mutant known as Cable will be teaming up with Pool. It’s pretty much a given that the Deadpool 2 production team will be pulling out all the stops to cast Cable and teas fans relentlessly about it until the ink dries on the contract for whomever they decide on. In the mean time, fans can continue to fantasize at all the actors who’ve cropped up. Names like Stephen Lang (Avatar), Keira Knightley (Pirate of the Carribean), Dolph Lundgren (Rocky IV), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) and Pierce Brosnan (James Bond). Only the latter two have reportedly been eyed by Fox.
Now another name has entered the mix. One that the Deadpool pool creative team and studio is supposedly really behind.
TheWrap reports that Fox is quite interested in eyeing star David Harbour to play Cable. Harbour, who’s stardom rose exponentially after appearing in the Stranger Things, Netflix’s hugely popular pop culture hit which dropped last summer. Collider warns that nothing’s been ironed out, but reaffirms that Harbour is one of a handful of actors who are being “seriously considered” for the part.
Cable is Nathan Summers, is the offspring clone of Scott Summers and a Jean Grey. As a baby, he was transported into one possible future timeline. He grew up there, saw some shit, and then as an adult he went back in time to come back to the present – it’s all timey wimey comic book logic, don’t ask questions. He later hooked up with Deadpool. While being the biggest odd couple of any timeline, they always seems find themselves on heroic escapades and save the day.
Harbours role in Stranger Things was that of a hardbitten, couldn’t be bothered, town sheriff. That standoffish authority type role isn’t too far removed from Cable. Harbour has the size and presence, but perhaps a little too soft for the role of Cable. Read the comics and then look at actor Stephen Lang, and he’s Cable incarnate. Analyzing FOX’s supposed choices in Kyle Chandler, Pierce Brosnan, and now David Harbour, it seems they’re going for an alternative, less literal, take on Cable.
David Leitch is directing Deadpool 2, replacing Tim Miller. Ryan Reynolds will return as the Merc with a Mouth. No other casting choices or release date has been made
