It’s hard to believe that a barely-known Aussie would spend the next 17 years of his career winning over the hearts of comic book and X-Men nerds playing one of the most iconic characters ever. When X-Men debuted in theaters in 2000, it was also Hugh Jackman‘s big start in the states. Since then he’s had a relatively steady career on the big screen and off. However, he’s always found a way to return to where it all started – with the character Wolverine. Sadly, Jackman has played the character for the last time (or so he says). As a big thank you to the fans who have stuck with him throughout the years (good and bad), he tweeted out a special video featuring fan art from his latest movie Logan. Check it out after the jump.
Here’s the wonderful tribute Jackman released for all of his fans to enjoy:
Was any of the art something you submitted? It’s hard to believe that he won’t be Wolverine anymore. Jackman has expressed many times how much he has loved the character and how much he has loved playing him. It’s why he’s stuck around for so long even though the X-Men franchise has gone through some great up and terrible downs.
While Jackman may be done with the role, Fox is not, especially with the X-Men franchise. The question is, when the time finally does come to pick a new Wolverine, who will step up to the plate? Needless to say, it will be quite the undertaking having to step into the shoes that Jackman has left behind. In the past, fans and Jackman, himself, have suggested that Tom Hardy would make an excellent choice. Check out this artist concept depicting Hardy as Wolverine.
Hardy stands at 5’9″ which is somewhat closer to what Marvel’s website has put Wolverine at (5’3″). This is significantly shorter than Jackman who is said to be 6’2″. The height difference plus his build (as seen when he played Bane in The Dark Knight Returns) makes Hardy a smart choice to be next in line. In the the end, though, whoever is chosen, it will always be Jackman’s role and he surely be missed.
