The latest instalment in a series that spans more than half a century, Star Trek: Discovery is due for release at some point later this year and will be the first series in the franchise since Star Trek: Enterprise wrapped up in 2005. The new show will star Sonequa Martin-Green, known for her role as Sasha Williams in The Walking Dead, as the protagonist, Lieutenant Commander Rainsford aboard the USS Discovery. Up until now, Star Trek shows have had an ensemble cast making up the crew of each ship, but has primarily focussed on the captains as the main characters.
The captain this time round, though, is expected to take a back seat in terms of the focus of the plot. This is evidenced enough by the way that other Starfleet captains aboard other ships were revealed – such as Michelle Yeoh’s Captain Georgiou – many months ago, but the Discovery‘s captain has just been announed now.
His name is Captain Lorca and he is the commanding officer aboard the ship, played by Jason Isaacs, whose past roles include Captain Hook, Lucius Malfoy and Dr Hunter “Hap” Percy in The OA, so it’s almost surprising to find him in a non-villainous role.
Aside from that, not much information has been released about the captain or what role he will play in the story – aside from, of course, commanding the ship. What his approach as a commander will be like also remains a mystery and how he will relate to the lieutenant protagonist is still being kept under wraps.
Even though it was initially planned that the new series would premiere in February, the show is still in production, with that original launch date having been pushed back a fair few times, with current estimates hoping for a release at some point on the other side of summer.
