Netflix, the popular streaming service that has continued to dominate all our free time has been a game changer. In addition to coining the phrase binge-watching, and giving us the perfect way to consume TV and movies from the comfort of our own homes (or on the go), the streaming service has been increasingly delivering Original Programming the same way HBO or any other premiere subscription cable service has, without the need for a cable package. We have such great shows like Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Stranger Things, and many others. Now, it looks like Netflix will once again change the game for us.
As per the Daily Mail, Netflix is looking to create interactive Original Programming that will allow users to decide how the plot will move forward on their programming. If you’ve ever played such Telltale Games like The Walking Dead, you understand how it works. This “choose your own story” format is currently in the planning stages. If this does go through, certain shows will film various plot points in advance that will be determined by the user’s choices. It is said that Netflix wants to make this so complex that there could possibly be “infinite” story content.
Netflix president Reed Hastings is excited for this potential way of doing things:
“Once you have got interactivity you can try anything.”
Another unnamed source went on to further elaborate:
“We’re doing work on branch narratives so you are actually making choices as you watch. All the content will be there, and then people will have to get through it in different ways. . .We’ll see how it plays out. It’s an experiment. We’ll see if it gets much success. For creators, it’s new territory.”
The pilot program will be used on an upcoming Original Programming children’s show, so stay tuned.
