Star Wars Celebration is the place to be for Star Wars fans, a roving annual gather of all things related to a galaxy far, far away including novels, toys, video games, comic books and animated series, as well as, more recently, any and all Star Wars film news. Just not in 2018 though. Yes, even though the 2017 event has yet to begin (that’s next month), the organizers of Celebration have announced that 2018 will be a skip year for the four-day event. So Star Warriors are going to have to party very hardy in Orlando in April to get two years worthy of nerdy goodness.

Here’s the official word from the Celebration website.

“Celebration is the official, definitive Star Wars event, with entertainment, interactive experiences and exclusives that can only be found at this Lucasfilm production. They are the ultimate community fan gathering as well, and friends will want to start planning to be together again to commemorate everyone’s favorite saga. The next official Celebration is slated for a location and date soon-to-be announced, in 2019.”

So what’s the deal? It may have something to do with the time crunch. There’ll just be a five-month window between the the release of The Last Jedi in December and the untitled Han Solo movie in May 2018. If they hold Celebration after May, that’s a whole year before the release of the final part of the sequel saga, and at that point it might be too early to release anything from the Colin Trevorrow film. On top of that, Lucasfilm has yet to announce what will come after Episode IX, which might indicate some behind the scenes difficulty getting stuff moving into development, but that’s just speculation. Likely, it’s the switchover from December to May releases that has them stymied.

In the meantime, we always have the 2017 Celebration. Guest will include Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy, and Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson, as well as Billy Dee Williams, Ian McDiarmid,  Star Wars Rebels executive producer Dave Filoni, and Rogue One stars Felicity Jones and Alan Tudyk.

Celebration will happen April 13-16, 2017, at the Orange County Convention Centre, and expect lots of news to come out of it.
