Let’s face it; Deadpool was every raunchy, comic book-adoring individual’s dream. It had everything you could ask for from one of the most sarcastic actors in Hollywood perfecting the role to some of the most gruesome fight scenes to grace the screen and the superhero movie trend in a long time. However, as the screen rolled the credits and the fans trudged out of the theaters, the question already on their minds was simply, ‘what’s next?’
Although there have been countless incredible television shows and movies in the superhero universe in the months preceding it and talk of multiple other new superhero films coming to the big screen, talk of a Deadpool 2 has been circling all of it and fans are pretty excited, to say the least. On top of this, with the new Deadpool 2 teaser we reported about on the 6th giving us a small yet potent dose of what’s to come, the fans of the chimichanga-eating, sarcastic, and unapologetic superhero are now more excited than ever to hear news about anything and everything Deadpool-related.
Although the entire cast has not been set in stone and rumors about multiple different individuals have surfaced, perhaps one of the most exciting and properly casted individuals said to be in the new film is Janelle Monae. Although the teaser hinted at Cable, in particular, a lot of fans were wondering where Domino was in the mix and, now, they may have their answer. Originally, the film had hinted at Kerry Washington playing the role of Domino in Deadpool 2, however, since then, the target has changed. In a recent episode of The Hashtag Show, the goal to cast the Moonlight and Hidden Figures star was released and the response was nothing but positivity yet again. Although no one is sure whether or not Washington is still in the mix, most individuals feel that Monae could truly help the new film stand apart in the long run.
Although Monae has recently made quite a name for herself in the film industry with Moonlight winning best picture at the Oscars (even with the La La Land situation) and Hidden Figures being nominated likewise, this is not the first time Monae has been accredited for her outstanding skills. In fact, Monae has been in the music industry long before acting and also has been a Covergirl since 2012 likewise. With her collaborations with both Deep Cotton and FUN as well as her own music continuously reaching the top of the charts, it’s no wonder that this fearless heroine is the perfect choice for Neena Thurman in the upcoming film (not to mention her clear addiction to black and white clothing).
Since her start in the industry, Monae has continuously set herself apart from being cut off on The Today Show when singing a protest song about police brutality entitled ‘Hell You Talmbout’ to purposefully portraying the futuristic android David Bowie would be proud of and, now, this same tenacity can be seen in the way she tackles film. Although multiple other actresses have been asked to take the role including Sienna Miller and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, they have turned down the part of Domino time and time again for undisclosed reasons leaving Monae at the top of the charts in a different way once again.
With the Deadpool 2 synopsis at last released and The Hashtag Show giving us an inside view as to what role Domino will play in the new film, it is no wonder as to why the ‘queen of swagger’ was chosen to give this character a bit of her flare and some of her acting pizazz likewise but, in all honesty, it was probably just Deadpool demanding he gets the best actress to star alongside him (what a diva). In the show, Domino was described as such:
“Neena is a no-nonsense badass who rarely shows her feeling. Highly capable, supremely confident and armored in… well armor… and bullet-proof sarcasm. But beneath her shell she’s still and vulnerable and some soft, beating remnant of her humanity remains intact. In this scene, we need to see both sides. When she can’t get what she needs with insults, bluster and threats we need to see some of that vulnerability. It’s hard for her to let down her guard, and in the mercenary community she grew up in showing compassion is almost embarrassing. We should feel like she’d be more comfortable killing Silberman than saying ‘Please.'”
Sound familiar? Or at least, doesn’t it sound an awful lot like a part the ‘badass’ Janelle Monae could play with her eyes closed? No matter what choice is made in the casting of Domino, we can all rest assured that it will definitely be one hardcore, fearless chick, and, although the film has not given a definitive release date and has only hinted at it in the teaser by stating ‘not soon enough’, the writers, director, stars, and teasers sure to come are reason enough to kick back, relax, snarf down a chimichanga, and know that the raunchy franchise will definitely continue to hold up to its expectations time and time again.
