This coming Friday, the fourth “Defenders” show for Marvel and Netflix, Iron Fist will be released on the streaming service. The show will focus on Danny Rand, who returns to New York City after being presumed dead for 15 years to reclaim his family company. Oh, he also knows Kung Fu and is the “Iron Fist,” based on his abilities. The show will feature actor Finn Jones as the titular character as well as a host of other actors. The first 6 episodes of the 13 episode first season were released to critics. Suffice to say, the reviews have not been pleasant. The show currently holds a 14% on Rotten Tomatoes and has been severely panned by critics universally.

Danny Rand himself, Finn Jones, who has received a large amount of flack for the whole “whitewashing” controversy (even though the character was a white male in the comic), and even had to take a break from twitter due to some of the backlash he’s received. Jones recently talked about the recent reviews of the show.

“Well I think there [are] multiple factors. What I will say is these shows are not made for critics, they are first and foremost made for the fans. I also think some of the reviews we saw were seeing the show through a very specific lens, and I think when the fans of the Marvel Netflix world and fans of the comic books view the show through the lens of just wanting to enjoy a superhero show, then they will really enjoy what they see.”

Jones continued to defend the show and still believes it is up there with Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage in terms of quality programming and storytelling.

“I think it’s a fantastic show, which is really fun and I think it stands up there with the other Defenders’ shows without a doubt.”

While this may be in “excuses” territory, for the time being, critics have not seen the entire series so perhaps it just might be better than it’s being received. One thing fans have complained about other Marvel/Netflix shows is that they tend to start strong and peter off towards the end of the season. Perhaps the show “gets better” later on. Regardless of how well-or-not-well-received Iron Fist is, he will return for the miniseries The Defenders which unites him, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage later on this year.
