Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the most successful Marvel films ever made, besides the Avengers films themselves, so it comes as no surprise that a sequel was immediately put into the works. Guardians was a surprise to many, it was a lesser known property that kind of came out of left field and took everyone by surprise by how good it was. A lot of how good it was is due to the film’s director, James Gunn, who is also helming the upcoming sequel. It’s just been confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is officially happening, which is good news for fans of the franchise. But Gunn has spoken out and said he might not be the one directing the film.
“There will be a Guardians 3, that’s for sure. We’re trying to figure it out. I’m trying to figure out what I want to do really, that’s all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I’m just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.”
James has spent the last few weeks promoting his upcoming thriller The Belko Experiment, which he co-wrote. He’s got Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 coming out in a few months, this guy is a busy dude, so it’s not really surprising that he hasn’t made a firm decision about what he’ll do next. But as the quote says, we’ll get a decision in the next few weeks.
Gunn claimed in a video a few months ago that doing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 left him emotionally exhausted, even before the film finished production. It’s a big film, and his sentiments echo those of fellow filmmaker Joss Whedon after completing Avengers: Age of Ultron, doing big films like these is a grind. Whedon stepped away from Marvel after Infinity War, will Gunn do the same? We have yet to see how Whedon’s absence affects the franchise, but Guardian films are more unique than Avengers, mostly because of the soundtracks that Gunn uses to build the plots. Will a Guardians film even work without Gunn? It might end up being one of those franchises that just kind of goes downhill which would be a shame for many.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would be part of Marvel’s Phase 4 lineup, and no release date has been attached to the film yet. But the Guardians will have an integral role in the upcoming Avengers movies. Here’s what Gunn had to say about that, as he’s serving as a producer on the Infinity War films:
“You know listen, I don’t think we should overstate things that it is an Avengers movie, but the Guardians are a part of the cosmic universe, they’re a part of Thanos’ stories, so, they are in there, and they have, not the biggest, but, an integral part to that.”
That’s all the news we have for now, fans will get plenty more of the Guardians with or without Gunn. Only time will tell how good of news that is. Guardians Volume 2 hits theaters hits theaters on May 5.
